Soundtrack

Possible soundtracks:

All This
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Erzvm7J9VM4?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This piece gives a somewhat strange feel as it aims to get you on the edge of your seats at times but does like Moorland have moments of horror in it combined though with senses of thriller. This can be used but would need to be examined in oreder to get the exact clip from it

Moorland
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/NClDQA4GUDo?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This soundtrack, perhaps not great does give moments of brilliant sound however has too many bits which make it more of a potential horror piece so thsi piece will not be considered

Penumbera
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/H5IFEc3hYSc?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This soundtrack had that mysterious feel to it and gave out a sense of the unknown which would be great for the thriller due to the fact our thiller aims to provide that mysterious feel to it. This is one of the top candidates.

Possible character names

After putting forward name suggestions for our two characters and debating on which would suit our specific film and characters, we have reached a conclusion on deciding what they will be from shrinking the name list down to two for each, depending on what the two names presented. The name chosen on from these two names to be our name we use in the actual thriller production.

Firstly, the female characters name has been chosen to be Eve. We have chosen his name because of the reasoning that Eve is quite a vulnerable and small portrayal of our character which signifies both of these things during the production of the thriller; plus the name also mean 'Night'. We chose Eve over the second suggestion of Scarlett. The feeling in the group was that Scarlett represents the colour red and love and passion which do not fit into the thriller we have done. The feeling was also that the name may be more commonly known in a romance film or even a horror film so wouldn't fit into the thriller produced.
Eve is also the name of the 'Femme Fatale' in Once Upon A Time In America so it was felt that Eve would be a great sybolistic name.
The last reason Eve was the strongest case for a name because of the story of Adam and Eve after Eve was seen to be tempting Adam, so would also make her quite a devient character.

Lastly, after a lot of changing we have again reached a conclusion on calling the enigmatic male figure Seth. This was chosen between this name and also Christian. We feel that the name Seth puts forward that sense of mystery and also sneaky whilst keeping himself away from the action which portrays him sort of like a shadow in many ways. This name was chosen over our second suggestion Christian because we feel Christian doesn't present that shadow type figure as much as Seth so came to the conclusion that Seth was the perfect name for our male character.

Moodboard and Inspiration from other thriller films.

Costume
For the costume aspect towards our thriller film, we are looking for it to look modernised but with aspects of the film noir genre. We want to use casual clothes however these clothes to be a dark/black colour. We think this supports the mystery of it and get the audience asking the question of 'Who is this unknown man?' and also 'Why is this girl wearing dark clothes?' There could be many reasons for this but mainly to hide themselves away from normal society where the man is not wanted to be noticed following the girl who also doesn't want to be followed.
Essex Boys has inspired our costume ideas through the character of Sean Bean. The dark leather clothes would be a decent for the male character as he is an enigmatic figure in our thriller film as well and acts as a shadow in it.
This would also help if our thriller would be shot in daylight but made to be black and white. These dark clothes would create the sense of a someone not wanting to be seen/found so gives them the idea that they are considered to be a shadow and un-noticed to anyone else.
Location
The location seen here in Essex boys where the wet and shiny streets are supported by a vanishing point is the idea we want to be able to use in our production of the thriller film. We want to be able to use a claustrophobic area and use signifiers such as shiny streets to emphasise our short film. The vanishing point would create that sense of 'walking into trouble' and in our thriller that is perfect due to the fact this girl is attempting to run away from her family but ironically running into even more trouble.
Ideally we would like to be able to shoot our film in Norwich city centre. This would be because the scenery of the area and buildings look very similar to the scene in The 'Third Man' where as you can establish that the tight and damp/wet streets and the slight tilt shot make it look very enigmatic and scary as well.
Secondly, the Third Man has heavily inspired our idea for our location. As it was mentioned before, the aim is to shoot in the city centre. This is because it relates very highly to The Third Man due to the reasoning of the tiled streets and claustrophobic nature of the location which would support our aim to create an enigmatic location and an area of enclosement and a sense of no escape for one character in particular.
Camera shots
We are also looking to use a variety of different camera angles but more than any we want to use over the shoulder shots. These types of shots help to position the audience in the shoes of the character involved.

We also aim to use many close up shots in our thriller to help get across what something is if they are unable to see in a regular shot or to show the audience the characters emotions. These two pictures you can identify being close up shots and extreme close up shots to show emotions again and closely shows the charcter and the horror in a scene.
If a regular shot was to be used in either of these two scenes/shots then we not be able to establish the emotions of Gloria Swanson in the picure above or the policemans identification.
Soundtrack
In some scenes we are looking to use diegetic sound to keep certain scenes natural and to emphasise that horror in some circumstances. For example, hearing footsteps but perhaps not seeing who is walking. However an option for some background sound for the main bulk of the film could be 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.

Here is an example of You'll never walk alone' by Gerry and the Peacemakers.
This could have been used in the thriller film of our production as a little bit of a insight t it, as the title 'You'll Never Walk Alone' suggests that the person is walking but is being followed which is ironic as that is exactly what is going to happen. It really is such a shame that it isn't an unassigned band otherwise it would have been an excellent song to use.
Lighting
We would love to shot during dark hours like this due to the reasoning that it helps to create the mystery and horror to scenes. This particular photo has a certain use of vanishing poin,t so also helps to show that sense of someone walking to danger and is shown in this picture as someone/something would potentially walk into darkness.
We are also looking to use a sort of spotlight. Here is just a basic idea of what we would like to acheive. This is obviously a much larger scale of what will actually happen although gives the idea of what we want to try and do, just much smaller. And so in other words the light would be artifical which would help to show the main aspects to a scene while keeping the darkness and that sense to the same scenes as well.
The thriller film, ideally would like to have as much natural light as possible, hence why the film will be shot during daylight hours. This shot from Essex Boys has inspired our ambition to shot in daylight because it can help to show that sense of an unexpected time of day for the thriller to commence which also helps with the enigma to the film as well.

Brief synopsis of our film and type of thriller

The thriller film that will be produced is a modern, enigmatic version of a missing girl who has choosen to run away from home because of abuse from family and who also doesn't want to be found by them because of this.
She is aiming to get as far away as possible by bus but is unaware of the enigmatic shadow that is keeping a close eye on her and what she is doing.
These two people are connected in one form or another through small hints such as two identical keyrings; one for each.

Rough shooting schedule

First shoot - Duration approx 2 hours
Wednesday 16th January
This will be our very first shooting time so will be us practising our ideas and shots; using different types of shot and angles. However we will essentially try to actually shoot some of the aspects to our film.

The aim to get as much shooting done as possible so it can be reviewed and edited.

When the first shoot arises, the aim would probobly choose to shoot the scenes which are the more easier and then go on to the scenes which may need more thought and shooting such as the flashbacks.

This shoot would take place in the city centre and during our 2 hour period with our media teacher Mrs Barton.

Second shoot - Durarion approx 2 hours
Wednesday 23rd January
Of course this is just a rough schedule for our shooting but this would be our second shoot.

This would be for any scenes to be shoot that were not able to shoot during our first shooting. This may also be used for any improvments to the film that would need to be conducted as well.

Again this shoot would be shot in Norwich city centre and also again during our media double session with our tutor Mrs Barton

At this stage we would like to be able to commence with our edit, potentially at the end of January/Start of February so we can make our film as good as possible. Obviously if we haven't been able to finish during our shoots, or even some scenes need reshooting then we will need to shoot during other hours so the actual edit may have to be moved so the other shots can be done.

At this present moment in time, the group are not one hundred percent if the need for more time will be needed so will have to see how it goes.

Possible locations for thriller

The first possible location is Riverside.
This could be a useful location to use for our thriller film due to the reasoning that if we could imagine this place at night it really could be something quite frightning and help make our thriller film look realistic and successful. Here, we are also able to see the vanishing point which can make somebody look as though they are walking towards some sort of danger. We can also establish the claustrophobic space which can also show the thriller genre right there.
We could also say that the street lights at this time would be on because we would probobly should during the night and darkness as you are able to establish here. This could be very useful especially if it would be a foggy/misty night as it would help to show that sense of the enigma. This would also be a strong location as we have the street lights and darknes which create a sense of mystery and also the water and shiny ground as well in the foreground and background.
This also maked for quite a spooky location because we can see the street light being projected through the trees which gives that sense again of nightmare.

The second possible location is Norwich city centre
This would be a sensible location to use because their are a lot of tiled streets which if shot on the correct night could be a fantastic generic signifier for our thriller due to the fact of the shiny streets; it would make for a thriller full of horror and mystery. It would also be an excellent location for our shoot because again we have the claustrophobic nature of the scene which would be a nice feature to use, especially using certain types of shots such as the tilt and also low angle shots which will show the menace of the location.

I went out and took this shot at night looking at the town hall. This shot would also argue the case for a possible location for shooting as this slight low angle shot with also a sense of a tilt creates that menace to the building, while also supported using the lights around and on it creating that sense of power and status and also nightmare as somebody would be intimidated at this not knowing what the buliding would be.
The last possible location could be Eaton Park
I have choosen that Eaton Park could be a beneficial location due to the reasoning that I have been here during the dark hours of the day and I might say that it has the potential to give a frightning experience which would be absolutly perfect considering we are aiming to create a thriller film.

This would also be a first class place for our thriller film because there are many areas to it that can use many generic signifiers such as the vanishing point shown, skateparks and sports courts that, when deserted can show the enigmatic effect combined with ambient lighting from small floodlights. I took thsi and thought this would be decent to shoot a thriller because it provides a sense of innocence to it however in our thriller film would be a false accusation.
I also decided to go out during the dark hours of the day and took a good few pictures that attempt to show how spooky, menacing and enigmatic this location really could be!

These two pictures try and show the vanishing point aspect of the park and gets the enigmatic effect questioning is there anything in the darkness coming towards you?
These pictures intext well with the vanishing point of Essex Boys. These pose the question as to what is going to happen if they continue through the tunnel or even keep walking into the darkness as we are unsure as to what is actually there. It also portrays somebody/driving into danger or putting themselves into trouble. For example, Essex Boys signifies the barrell of a gun sight.

These next three pictures help to show the spooky side of the park, helping to also connate the mystery and sense of an abandoned place or deserted place,

On the right shows a sense of claustrophobia and entrapment which can portray our story to be where a character has no where to go and run away to, which interlinks with Kill Bill one where the women has no wear to run to as she is injured and eventually is murdered.
The picture seen left shows abondonment really well as the low angle makes it look scary, plus if it can be established that the ice seen on the seat and on the frame are covered in ice which makes for more of that spooky nature.
Just a few more pictures that try and give that enigmatic sense to the location and scary feel to it and also gets you wondering what is around or in the second pictures case, what is that light in the background of the darkness?

Can you see the light in the dark? This makes you wonder what the light is, in the distance if it is anybody at all. The worms eye shot shows that sense of someone being alone and also being isolated as no body else is anywhere to be seen in this vanishing pointy.
This picture, especially the padlock which keeps the public from entering any further through this gate makes the enigma even more of an enigma becuase we are blind as to why this section of the park has been cut off from society. The cobwebs on the right of the gate also makes for that spooky nature to the location.

These last five pictures I took, I feel are the best of the whole lot because they show such a spooky side to Eaton Park and an excellent sense of the enigmatic feel!

This picture to the left and above shows that enigmatic sense and also that sense of a dark and cold atmosphere which can show a person entering the unknown in a way which can intertext with Essex Boys as the young man is shown to be driving against his will into the unknown.
The frozen water in these pictures makes you think well what is happening. It could show the fact that someone may not want to be there as you can see the water here although also are unaware of what is on the other side of the frozen pond as it is surrounded by darkness.

This is such a successful picture as it looks so spooky with the mists around the frozen water, while also having an unknown building in the background using this slight tilt.
This shows a sense of abondonment where the building is shown to be quite creepy and uses that enigmatic effect as you do not know what the building suggests or if there is anybody in the building itself. The high angle shot also makes it look very menacing to the naked eye.

Planning - Shot List and brief synopsis of our thriller film

Camera shots for our thriller film - Possibilities
Shot 1
The opening scene would consist of a close up shot of a missing poster being nailed to a lampost. The close will also help us to establish an enigma of a keyring which will be the same as the missing girl.
Shot 2
Next would be the main character, in this sense the missing girl, and an over the shoulder shot of her walking towards the poster, with it then having an extreme zoom towards the poster,
Shot 3
In our next scene we are aiming to use over the shoulder shots with a shot reverse shot between the missing girl and a photographer in a flashback from the previous shot, where the picture being taken is the same picture as seen on the missing poster in reality. This would give the sense of seeing her face but not seeing the photographer's so creates that sense of mystery of 'Who is that man?'
Shot 4
We will next have another close up shot of after the flashback and the girl will be ripping the poster off of the lampost.
Shot 5
This shot would potentially be a longshot of the missing girl walking away from that lampost and walking down a tiled street. This would be even more effective especially if the weather would be misty and damp which would create a decent scene full of generic conventions and also mystery. We may also add a slight Tilt shot which will help to establish the sense of confusion and nightmare.
Shot 6
Once the main character of the scene walks down the street, she walks past a bin and we will have a shot of that character next to the bin, then going to a close up shot of her taking the ripped poster and keys out of her pocket. Bare in mind this key would be identical to the one the unknown character at the beginning. Another close up of her putting the poster and also keys into the open bin. Another character follows not far behind and picks the keys out of the bin using yet another close up shot, still not knowing who this character is however she turns around and notices the person taking out the keys which creates the enigmatic effect to the thriller. At this point she is acting fairly paranoid.
Shot 7
Cuts to the bus/train station and the girl is buying a bus ticket, close up on the handover of the ticket. She then walks past a photobooth where seletaped to it there is another extreme close up of an envolope with her name on and the same keys that she threw away.
Shot 8
Close up of her turning around slowly, and noticing a man sitting on a bench reading a newspaper. But notices something in his left hand where an extreme close up shows us the keyring again from both characters. A second extreme close up of the top of the newspaper where this enigmatic character moves the paper down slowly and we see his eyes. Shot reverse shot to the girl who knows who it is.

This is when the film would end leaving it on the cliffhanger of 'Who is this man?' and 'How does she know who it is?'

Here is a visual narrative of our plan for our thriller film. This outlines the sound which will be used, the type of shot that will be used for each particular scene, and the basic idea of how theses shots will be presented within the film.
It also gives a sense of how the certain scenes will look from within the contents of the thriller film production.
